The South African Department of Social Development is inviting all prospective bursary holders with a calling to be Social Workers to apply for its Social Work Scholarship programme for 2013. This profession is for people who help others with passion and those who do not whine about being “inconvenienced” by other people’s misery – it is for those who would leave in the middle of a party to help the needy. If you are such person, please apply because South Africa needs you.

What does the Social Work Scholarship cover?

In the department’s scholarship guide they state: “As part of the recruitment and retention strategy and initiative to address critical and scarce skills in the sector, the National Department of Social Development is hereby making a scholarship available in the field of Social Work.

Applications are open to current Social Work students as well as prospective students who would like to enroll for a Social Work Degree.  Students who are currently holders of a National Department of Social Development Scholarship do not have to apply.

The Scholarship will cover Registration, Tuition, Prescribed books, stipend for practical’s and official accommodation provided by the University (ONLY ACCOMMODATION, WHICH HAS BEEN CONTRACTED BY THE RELEVANT UNIVERSITY MIGHT BE CONSIDERED).”

And, what are the requirements for the social work scholarship?

The requirements for the Department of Social Development Social Work scholarship are as follows:

    Be a South African Citizen
    Comply with the entry requirements set by the University
    Fully and correctly complete the Scholarship Application form
    Be prepared to enter into an agreement with the Department (More details will be contained in the agreement)
    Must complete the qualification within the minimum period as prescribed by the University

What should I attach to the application form?

The department insists that you attach the following:

    Certified copy of Grade 12 results
    Certified copy of Identity Document of applicant
    Certified copy of ID and Proof of income of Parent/ Guardian
    Current first year students/Prospective students in Social Work who need to undergo a selection process as prescribed by the University must provide proof that they have been selected to continue with their studies. (proof of admission by the University/proof of payment for admission)
    Certified copy of Identity Document of applicant
    Certified copy of Academic record on the official letterhead of the University (If already a student)

  1. Haai, kindly assist me i want to apply for social work degree at walter sisulu university former university of Transkei but my problem is that i do not have a hope that i am going to be admitted there becouse i did apply even as far back as in 2009 and my Grade 12 results are good

    1. Hi Nombuso,

      Please apply for the bursary to the department, details are in the advert. On applying to university, I advice you to visit the admissions office at WSU to enquire on your application.

Hi I have a query I’ve been provionsinally accepted to the university of western cape for social work the final selection will be communicated to me in january there 4 it means I can’t apply until I hv the final selection letter wat do I do? I really would like to apply 4 this bursary I need financial assist am from durban. Please reply thank u

    1. Hi Lungi, unfortunately this bursary is no longer accepting applications since it closed on 31 October 2012. However you did qualify as you were provisionally accepted. Please search for other bursaries and PLEASE apply for NSFAS at the financial aid office at UCT.

Hi I did apply for dis Scholarship ontime and I attached all the requirements ,may u plz inform me about the date of responds .I’m studying Bachelor of Social Work at Unisa (University of South Africa) this is my second semerster ,I don’t have money for registration and th closing date is on the 25th of January now I’m so cross I don’t wish to missout this semester plz help me ( my eyes always full of tears when I’m thinking about registration) I shall be glad if u can assist me thank u

  5. Hi I have applied for a bursary in social work in limpopo and I had my matric results and admittion letter from the university of pretoria but they say they are still processing how are we supposed to register if we don’t have money for registering

  6. I am supposed to have registered my final year in Social work with UKZN Howard College. I am still not registered because I am owing 2012 fees. My single mother has been struggling with her salary for the past years. I have tried to appeal but have failed. I am at the dead end as I feel I am about to achieve my degree and this happens, please advise? I have good results and have been applying for Financial aid since my first and have been turned down!

    1. Hi Sthabile, what is H symbol? Is this admittance to a Higher Certificate? If this is the case please go back to improve your results because no university in the country will admit you for a degree with those kind of results.
