2015 Liberty Bursary Programme

Bursaries are granted for full-time study of Actuarial Science at various tertiary institutions.  Applicants must show the ability to innovate and share our passion for people; thus maintaining our competitive advantage.
Successful applicants are expected to do a minimum amount of vacation work during the June and December holidays at Liberty Life’s Head Office in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

Bursaries are reviewed after each examination based on the student’s academic performance and are renewed annually.  All bursaries are granted on merit, but preference is given to black (African, Coloured and Indian) applicants.

Requirements:
• Excellent overall results including a distinction for higher grade mathematics.
• A minimum of two distinctions (including mathematics) if higher grade physical science is one of the incumbent’s subjects.
• A minimum of four distinctions (including mathematics) if physical science is not one of the incumbent’s subjects.
• At tertiary level, students must maintain continuous excellence in academic performance in all subjects.
• Good leadership qualities and participation in extramural activities such as sports, debating societies, chess clubs and various Olympiads, etc are an added advantage.

Costs Covered:
• Tuition fees are paid for each academic year of study and reviewed annually based on academic performance.
• Residence fees/subsistence allowance is paid for shared accommodation at a university residence.
• A monthly subsistence allowance is paid if the student chooses not to live at the university residence.
• A book allowance is paid annually for the purchase of textbooks.
• First year students qualify for a calculator allowance. Applications are open to all students regardless of the year of study. Once approved, the bursar will enter into an agreement with Liberty Life that will be renewed annually.
All bursars are obliged to complete a period of employment for every year of sponsorship. The standard employment contract will be entered into once studies are completed.

Studietrust Bursaries

Studietrust Bursary Scheme for 2014 is currently open for applications for various fields of study in from academically-gifted South African prospective students from financially-disadvantaged backgrounds.

South Africa’s oldest bursary NGO’s, Studietrust, has just announced that its bursary application process for undergraduate bursaries for has commenced and it will be closing on 30 September 2013.

Studietrust offers access bursaries and sponsored bursaries. Access bursaries are usually partial bursaries covering only a limited amount of the university costs. Sponsored bursaries may cover all fees, including books, tuition, travel and other fees, where applicable.

PwC Accounting Bursary (CA(SA)) for 2014

The PwC operation in Welkom is offering a bursary to an aspirant chartered accountant (CA(SA)), the bursary is available to both students in matric or those currently in university studying towards a SAICA recognised CA(SA) qualification.

Bursary holders are required to serve a three year (minimum) training contract with the firm on completion of their post-graduate studies. This period may be extended depending on the value of the bursary awarded or the number of years for which the bursary is awarded. A training contract is a learnership contract for 3 years where you will be applying the theory learnt at university to the practical environment.

The above includes:

  • Performing audit procedures at clients to express an opinion on their financial records.
  • Working closely with audit teams to ensure client deadlines are met.
  • Working in a challenging business environment.
  • Interacting with people on various levels of experience.
  • Gaining a wealth of experience on best business practices.

Wilmed Park Hospital Nursing Bursaries (Enrolled Nurse)

Wilmed Park Hospital in Klerksdorp makes nursing bursaries available to members of the community every year. Bursaries are for people wishing to study to become enrolled nurses.

Since January 2003, Wilmed Park Private Hospital has offered bursaries to members of the community who are interested in training as Enrolled Nurses. The following process is followed in selecting candidates:

  • During the months June & July of every year, bursary application documents and paper select score grids are made available.
  • Candidates have to rate their own matric results (or latest exam written if in matric) according to the score grid.
  • Candidates with an M-score of 15 (old curriculum) or 22 (new curriculum) may then submit the application document and supportive documents.
  • Only original/certified copies of required documents will be accepted. School leaving certificates must be authenticated by SAQA.

2014 Harmony Bursaries

Mining Engineering

Mining is an underground or open cast process whereby minerals are extracted by means of explosives.

Metallurgy

Metallurgy is the study of the economical recovery of precious metals and minerals. (Exploring by use of all the disciplines and techniques.)

Mechanical and Electrical Engineering

A competent Electrical or Mechanical Engineer is a member of the management team at each operation. They are responsible for the safe installation and the proper operation, running and maintenance of all machinery, both electrical and mechanical. They are also responsible for the safe erection and proper maintenance of all buildings and structures on these operations.

Geology

At Harmony the Geologist is an integral member of the Management Team, and is accountable for extracting ore body in an optimal manner. At an early stage the geologist will apply his/her knowledge to the practical solution of problems in the underground environment, liasing closely with the production teams. Daily duties include underground mapping, borehole logging, data collection and synthesis (structural, sedimentological and grade) and communication of their findings to the rock breaking teams.

Finance

The finance department is responsible for all financial transactions. The correct allocation, classification and value of these transactions should be done on a daily basis.

The function is also responsible to ensure that the company complies with certain statutory requirements as lined out by the Companies and Tax Acts.

BDO Chartered Accountancy Bursary 2014

BDO Chartered Accountancy Bursaries are awarded on a financial needs basis and are linked to satisfactory academic achievements. We are looking for well-rounded individuals who perform equally well in all areas of their lives. Other qualities that would strengthen an application include high energy levels, good communication skills and self-confidence. To apply for a bursary with us please review the criteria you need to meet to be considered.

How do I qualify for a bursary?
1. All students who are already studying, or who are planning to study towards, a Chartered Accountant (SA) qualification
2. Students must therefore qualify for admission or be registered for a B.Com (Accounting) or equivalent degree at a university recognised by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA).
3. Bursaries will be awarded on the basis of academic merit.
4. Those persons who have any other financial support or bursary whereby they are required to complete a period of work within the bursary-awarding company, will not be eligible for a BDO bursary.

VALUE OF BURSARY

Bursaries awarded will be limited to academic fees (or part thereof) and a book allowance. The amounts awarded will differ per BDO firm. Bursaries are renewable providing the student achieves a pass rate at the end of each academic year.

Bursaries will be awarded to the persons whom the firm believes have the commitment to qualify as a Chartered Accountant (SA), have an academic record which indicates the ability to do so and with due regard to financial need. In return for the bursary, the student undertakes to work for the firm for a period equal to the number of academic years for which BDO provides support, subject to a maximum of the period of the training contract required in terms of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA). The student also undertakes to be available for vacation work at the firm’s premises.
