Research Internship Wits University

The Centre for Health Policy (CHP) is situated within the School of Public Health at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. CHP is committed to building capacity in health policy and systems research, offering a nurturing, supportive environment that emphasizes mentorship and skills-development for people passionate about a career in this emerging field. We have the opportunity to host one South African research intern for a year to build their research skills by working in the area of health system strengthening and policy transformation at a district level.
Brief Description
Successful candidates will be highly motivated, with a strong interest in health equity and social justice. They will be passionate about research, with some prior experience and an eagerness to learn new methods and approaches. Applicants will have a relevant Master’s degree (e.g. public health, sociology, political science, development studies) and knowledge of public health, health systems or health policy will be an advantage, but is not necessary provided they are interested in developing expertise in these areas. All candidates are expected to have excellent writing and conceptual skills, and be able to work well in a multi-disciplinary team. Due to funder requirements, applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents in South Africa.
CHP is a South African health policy and systems research unit based in the School of Public Health at the University of the Witwatersrand. We employ public health and social scientists and offer a dynamic environment in which to conduct cutting-edge, multi-disciplinary health systems and policy research; write academic publications; engage in national & international policy debates; and participate in international consortia. CHP’s current research focuses on health systems, human resources, health care financing, social exclusion and access to health care, policy implementation analysis, and maternal and child health. In addition, our work includes policy engagement and postgraduate teaching. We have an established national and international reputation, and our success is built on innovation and diversity.
