The Sensor Science and Technology competence area of the CSIR MSM operating unit focuses on research and development (R&D) in fields such as sonar, acoustics, solid-state actuation, and electro-optical technologies and applications. Activities span the full cycle of innovation from strategic basic research through to industrialisation and technology transfer to industry. Projects are performed for both internal and external clients and collaborative research is conducted with higher education institutes.
Within this competence area, there is an opportunity for a dynamic and self-motivated Intern. The prospective student can work at the CSIR premises or at the university under a dedicated supervisor and visit the CSIR on specific intervals.
Key skills required:
- Strong programming/debugging skills with experience with C++ programming.
- Object-oriented programming and software development.
- Experience in software and GUI development, architecture and design.
- Fundamental understanding of 2D/3D graphics.
- Linux and Linux-based development experience.
- Knowledge in high speed streaming of large amount of data.
- Knowledge in MATLAB programming (simulations).
- Ability to work under their own initiative.
- Excellent work ethic.
Prospective project topics that the candidate may be involved in:
i) Implementation of signal processing algorithms
ii) Implementation of imaging algorithms
iii) High speed processing (design simulation and implementation)
iv) Algorithm development (Array theory, various areas in sonar which is similar to radar)
v) Designing, modelling and simulation of various aspects of sonar systems and transducers (equivalent circuits).
Please note that part of these projects can also be used for Master’s or doctoral degrees.
Qualifications, skills and experience:
- The minimum requirement is a Bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering or equivalent.
- Willingness to register for a postgraduate degree or the student should currently be registered for a postgraduate degree.
