Dr Math Internships | CSIR

The Integrative Systems, Platforms and Technologies (ISPT) competence area of the CSIR Meraka Institute focuses on the research, design and development of next generation ICT systems, platforms, frameworks and components. The aim is to provide novel building blocks and integrative mechanisms to enable and empower multidisciplinary ICT solutions for developing market environments.

One such platform that has been developed over the past 5 years is Dr MathTM. Dr MathTM is a mobile tutoring service which allows mathematics learners to use Mxit and Google Talk, on their cellphones, to access tutors who provide real-time support and assistance with mathematics homework and revision. Users are able to engage in a one-to-one text-based conversation with a tutor, who supports them in solving their problems. The service can be likened to a text-based call centre, where individual users are assigned to tutors, based on tutor availability. Tutors make useof internet-based work stations to answer the queries, and the service is available after formal school hours.

There exists a need to appoint 2 full-time interns for the Dr MathTM service as it continues to grow.

Further, the IPST competency area has a large portfolio of projects that require young, enthusiastic individuals to make a valuable contribution to all project deliverables. With an emphasis on software development, these individuals will be assigned tasks to projects that match their skill set.

Interns will be employed on a fixed term contract during which they will be required to: develop software and contribute to the technical outputs of the project
