The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) is looking for 200 unemployed graduates to join the 12-month DSTI-National Youth Service Programme starting in April 2026. The opportunities are open to unemployed young South African graduates in STEM fields and Communication, Journalism and Media Studies.

Who can apply?

You must be between 18 and 35 years old with a qualification in one of the following fields:

  • Science, Engineering, or Technology.
  • Communication, Journalism, or Media Studies.

Monthly stipends

Participants will receive a monthly allowance based on their qualification level:

  • National Diploma (NQF 6): R 4,500
  • Bachelor’s Degree / B.Tech (NQF 7): R 5,000
  • Honours (NQF 8): R 5,500
  • Master’s (NQF 9): R 6,500
  • PhD (NQF 10): R 7,700

What you will be doing

  • Science/Tech Graduates: You will work at schools, science centers, universities, or nature sites (like botanical gardens) to help promote science.
  • Journalism/Media Graduates: You will work with community media (radio, newspapers, etc.) to help explain science topics to the public.
