The Gauteng Department of Health is inviting applications for its 2024 Nursing Diploma intake. Applicants are invited to apply to the Gauteng College of Nursing to study towards the Diploma in Nursing in 2024 at one of the College campuses: • Ann Latsky Campus • Chris Hani Baragwanath Campus • SG Lourens Campus • Bonalesedi Campus.
To successfully apply and be considered for the training, please take note of the following:

  • You are required to register a profile on the system before you can apply.
  • Must be a South African citizen, who resides in the Gauteng Province.
  • You must be in possession of one of the following school leaving certificates – a Senior Certificate, a National Senior Certificate, currently in Grade 12 or National Vocational Certificate Primary Health
  • Applications must be done on the GPG Professional Job Centre system before or on the 30th June; NO late applications will be accepted

PURPOSE OF THE QUALIFICATION

The purpose of the Diploma in Nursing (NQF Level 6) programme is to develop a generalist nurse who can demonstrate focused knowledge and skills in general nursing. This programme takes into account the Primary Health Care (PHC) approach and encompasses the core competencies for disease prevention, health promotion, treatment and rehabilitation required to tackle the physical and psychosocial determinants of health, with the aim of contributing towards strengthening healthcare systems through delivery of comprehensive, high quality and safe nursing services.

Are you a South African citizen who resides in Gauteng and wish to study nursing from 2021? The Gauteng Department of Health is inviting applications from Grade 12 learners OR unemployment youths with a Grade 12 or equivalent qualification (see below) for their 2021 Nursing Intake/Bursaries.

Applicants are invited to apply to the Gauteng College of Nursing to study towards the Diploma in Nursing in 2021 at one of the College campuses: • Ann Latsky Nursing Campus • Chris Hani Baragwanath Nursing Campus • SG Lourens Nursing Campus • Bonalesedi Nursing Campus.

What are the requirements?


To successfully apply and be considered for the training, please take note of the following:
• You are required to register a profile on the system before you can apply.
• Must be a South African citizen, who resides in the Gauteng Province.
• You must be in possession of one of the following school leaving certificates – a Senior Certificate, a National Senior Certificate, currently in Grade 12 or National Vocational Certificate Primary Health
• Applications must be done on the GPG Professional Job Centre system before or on the 07th August 2020; NO late applications will be accepted
• Certified documents will be uploaded on the system, however you will be required to take supporting documents to the selection centre should you be shortlisted.
• No hand delivered or emailed applications will be accepted, all applications must be done online.

The following subject criteria are required:
• Senior Certificate: English HG D or SG C, Biology HG D or SG C, Mathematics HG D or SG C and an M score of 17
• National Senior Certificate: English Level 4, Life Sciences Level 4, Mathematics Level 4 or Maths Literacy Level 5, and an APS of 27 or more (Life Orientation counts half the score)
• National Vocational Certificate: 50% in Fundamental Subjects (English First Additional Language, Maths/Maths Literacy, Life Orientation) and 60% in the Vocational Subjects (SA Health Care System, Public Health, The Human Body and Mind and Community Oriented Primary Care)
• Current Grade 12 learners must meet the National Senior Certificate requirements in their Grade 11 final results.

Salary: R 102 534.00 plus 37% in lieu of benefits (Level 2)

Location: SASSA Head Office- Pretoria (Ref No: SAS H/O 22/06/20-20) Duration: 12 months contract

Candidate should hold a Senior Certificate (NQF level 4) plus the Nursing or Paramedic certificate coupled with 1-3 years’ experience in a Medical healthcare/office/ facility and clinical experience and/or Occupational Health and Safety environment will be an added advantage. Ability to start immediately. Able to commit five (5) days a week, Working hours Monday to Friday, from 06:00 to 18:00. Ability to work in outdoor environments. Expected to wear PPE (Nursing Uniform, goggles, gloves, respirator/face mask, suit/coveralls/gown (potentially-As required). Recommended skills: Symptom Recording, Team Working, Collections, responsible, professional, strong communicator, and reliable. Reliable transport. Computer literacy is essential.

The candidate will be responsible screen all visitors, contractors and employees before entering the property to help prevent the spread of the infection for Corona Virus; Observe all visitors, contractors and employees for cold, flu and respiratory symptoms before entering the facility; Check temperature of all visitors, contractors and employees using a no-contact thermometer; Record all results of each visitor, contractor and employee who are not permitted on property and submit to the Unit Manager; Enforcing Personal Protective Equipment at facility entrances; Allowing or deny entrance into the workplace; Facilitate protocols and provide assistance in the COVID- 19 observation room; Maintain log of employees and visitors who enter the SASSA Head Office premises; Maintain log of employees and visitors who refuse the temperature check or refused to answer questions and provide to the Unit Manager; Comply with all designated safety policies and procedures to include wearing company provided and required PPE in the work area; Participate in required COVID-19 training classes (screening, PPE, safe work practice and proper hygiene); Keep track of stock level for masks, thermometer covers, and working conditions of thermometers, etc.; Attend the meeting of the COVID-19 related project meetings; Must be able to report for duty immediately.

Preference will be given to African Female followed by Person with Disability and White Male, respectively

The Western Cape Department of Health offers a limited number of bursaries for full-time study each year in fields where a shortage of skills has been identified.

The aim of the bursary is to attract qualified persons with the required competencies, knowledge and skills to join the Department to meets its service delivery needs. In 2006 academic year, for example, the following bursaries per health science study field were awarded:

  • Nursing.
  • Medical (MBChB).
  • Pharmacy.
  • Radiography.
  • Emergency medical care.

Please note more health science study fields may be added or removed per academic year based on Departmental service delivery needs.

The bursaries are awarded on a work back principal on a year for a year basis. Community Service Year will count towards the student’s 1st year of bursary obligation, although internship years will not. Students who are working, may start paying back their bursary obligation as soon as they have successfully completed their studies.

Who may apply?

To apply for one of these bursaries you must be:

  • A South African citizen residing in the Western Cape
  • Be accepted at the relevant accredited Higher Education Institution (HEI)

Bursars’ obligations:

Bursars are expected to furnish the Department with satisfactory proof of registration at an accredited academic institution at the start of the financial year. He or she is also expected to submit all annual or supplementary examination results to the Department within 30 days of receiving such results.
