The FSCA will grant a bursary to a Grade 12 student for actuarial science studies through the University of Witwatersrand or the University of Pretoria, for easy communication and mentoring of the student. This bursary is targeted at previously disadvantaged South African students with a South African ID who are not able to further their career in the actuarial science field for the period 2022 to 2025. The final decision to award the bursary will depend on the Grade 12 results and admission to an actuarial study programme through the University of Witwatersrand or the University of Pretoria. The successful candidate will be required to enter into a work-back contract with the FSCA proportional to the number of years he/she has been funded by the FSCA.

The FSCA Actuarial Study Bursary will cover the following

  • Registration and tuition fees;
  • Accommodation;
  • Meals;
  • Books/study material/stationery/Internet time;
  • Laptop (once-off); and
  • Living expenses (monthly allowances for incidental expenses).

Experiential Learning

The bursar will be required to spend a minimum of 4 weeks per year at the FSCA during his/her vacation breaks for experiential learning.

Liberty Actuarial Bursaries are granted from second year of study to full-time students pursuing a degree in Actuarial Science at ASSA (Actuarial Society of South Africa) accredited South African universities. Applicants must meet the minimum academic criteria to be considered for the bursary.

Requirements:

  • Registered full time student pursuing a degree in Actuarial Science at  an ASSA (Actuarial Society of South Africa) accredited South African universities.
  • At tertiary level, students must maintain continuous excellence in their academic performance in all subjects, maintaining a minimum of 65% average.
  • Good leadership qualities and participation in extramural activities such as sports, debating societies, chess clubs and various Olympiads, etc. is an added advantage.
  • Must be a South African citizen registered with an accredited institution

Bursary Cover

Bursaries are granted for full-time study of Actuarial Science at various tertiary institutions.  Applicants must show the ability to innovate and share our passion for people; thus maintaining our competitive advantage.
Successful applicants are expected to do a minimum amount of vacation work during the June and December holidays at Liberty Life’s Head Office in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

Bursaries are reviewed after each examination based on the student’s academic performance and are renewed annually.  All bursaries are granted on merit, but preference is given to black (African, Coloured and Indian) applicants.

Requirements:
• Excellent overall results including a distinction for higher grade mathematics.
• A minimum of two distinctions (including mathematics) if higher grade physical science is one of the incumbent’s subjects.
• A minimum of four distinctions (including mathematics) if physical science is not one of the incumbent’s subjects.
• At tertiary level, students must maintain continuous excellence in academic performance in all subjects.
• Good leadership qualities and participation in extramural activities such as sports, debating societies, chess clubs and various Olympiads, etc are an added advantage.

Costs Covered:
• Tuition fees are paid for each academic year of study and reviewed annually based on academic performance.
• Residence fees/subsistence allowance is paid for shared accommodation at a university residence.
• A monthly subsistence allowance is paid if the student chooses not to live at the university residence.
• A book allowance is paid annually for the purchase of textbooks.
• First year students qualify for a calculator allowance. Applications are open to all students regardless of the year of study. Once approved, the bursar will enter into an agreement with Liberty Life that will be renewed annually.
All bursars are obliged to complete a period of employment for every year of sponsorship. The standard employment contract will be entered into once studies are completed.

The STANLIB Bursary Sponsorship Programme funds tertiary level education, allowing previously disadvantaged students the opportunity to study at any university in South Africa. The programme has been running since 2005, and has funded 42 students since inception. STANLIB offers a number of bursaries each year for students studying towards the following qualifications:

Finance, Human Resources, Investment Management, Marketing and Communications, IT, Actuarial Science, Economics, and Operations.

Students who are currently in matric, first, second or third year or are completing their Honours degree may apply for these bursaries. People living with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

Bursary applications are now open and will close on 31 October 2013.
