The SCSR lab is the only authorized testing facility in South Africa to conduct functional performance monitoring and testing of this Self-Contained Self-Rescuer equipment. SCSRs are critical protective equipment made to protect underground miners from inhaling hazardous materials during the course of an emergency escape.

The duties and responsibilities of the successful intern include, but will not be limited to:

  • Perform leak testing on SCSRs
  • Conduct SCSR set up and detect operational state (in terms of safety) of lung breathing equipment
  • Calibrate lung breathing simulators and gas analyzers
  • Conduct thorough inspection of such breathing simulators and gas analyzers
  • Thoroughly inspect the SCSRs prior to testing
  • Make sure test data is accurate
  • Record/document all testing results
  • Collect and organize test graphs and certificates
  • Perform structural tests on SCSRs
  • Adhere to good lab practices and lab housekeeping
  • Help contribute to creating and maintaining a safe and healthy workspace
  • Provide assistance to co-workers with other lab works as needed
  • Provide assistance with relevant admin work
  • Adhere to QMS, ISO 9001 standards, DMR regulations, SANAS requirements and customer needs
  • Clean and maintain lab equipment during downtime
  • Make sure all measuring equipment is accurately calibrated

What are the requirements?

Candidates who meet the following minimum eligibility requirements are highly encouraged to apply:

  • Holds a National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
  • 12 months of work experience obtained from a mechanical testing environment is an advantage
  • Good grasp of procedures and test methods
  • Great attention to detail
  • Able to deliver quality results under pressure
  • Takes ownership and responsibility
  • Computer literate with adequate MS Office skills
  • Solid oral and written communication skills
  • Some technical capacity to test software and learn how to operate equipment
  • Preferably with ISO 17025 training or actual work experience gained from an ISO 17025 accredited lab

  • Computer literate;
  • A valid security clearance fit for the environment;

South African citizenship is required, must have or be able to obtain a valid security clearance, and must not hold dual citizenship.

  • Perform function reconciliation and beverage  stocktaking

Qualifications and skills:

  • Currently enrolled for a three year qualification in hospitality or events management (must have completed two years’ theoretical component of the qualification);
  • An outstanding academic record for the two years of study;

The CSIR has an Internship opportunity for an Intern: Mechanical Engineering in the Aeronautic Systems group within the Defence Peace Safety and Security unit. The purpose of this position is design work in Additive Manufacturing (AM) / 3D printing and thereby providing the incumbent with practical work experience in the AM field. This position is based in Pretoria.

Key Responsibilities :
During the internship, the successful candidate will be involved in the mechanical design of wind tunnel models, mechanical testing and the design of polymer articles. The work will include:
Prediction of failure modes and calculation of stresses;
Procurement of test articles;
Work with Polymer additive manufacturing and metal additive manufacturing;
Acquisition, set-up and testing of polymer article;
Investigation and application of surface finishing techniques;
Responsibility to meet project timescales.

Qualifications, skills and experience:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering;
  • Must be proficient in the SolidWorks CAD package;
  • Hands-on experimental experience will be an advantage;
  • Ability to follow instructions and work on fixed timescales;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Be an enthusiastic and a self-motivated individual;
  • Take ownership of certain tasks and take initiative in their position;
  • Ability to work well under pressure as well as to work as part of a team.
  • Willingness to work in a military research environment that serves both local and international clients and stakeholders.
  • South African citizenship and security clearance are required for this position.
