JOB OVERVIEW

He/she will work closely with digital teams to keep records of data to track the performance of digital activities against agreed objectives and targets. He/she will assist with developing and managing common definitions, dashboards and reporting forms and sharing information between teams and departments. He/she will be very involved in providing data for and assisting coordinators with data analysis for reporting. He/she will also provide some basic administrative support to the team, such as maintaining and updating calendars and project plans. He/she will develop skills and knowledge in the following area:

  • Developing and tracking metrics, KPIs and indicators for digital activities
  • Understanding and reporting on digital activities
  • Using data to find the answers to specific questions
  • Working with teams and people who have different objectives, experiences, etc.
  • Project management cycle (planning, production/preparation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation/reporting) and conceptualising, monitoring and evaluating digital campaigns

KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Digital (Comms) Data Responsibilities:

  • Set up and maintain an agreed upon glossary of digital terms, KPIs and indicators for each digital platform to ensure we are using terms and measures consistently (e.g. engagement rate calculated vs reach or impressions)
  • Document and store records of all digital accounts, platforms, activities and campaigns (including recording all posts, what images were used, times, etc. for analysis purposes). Records should be kept where they will be available to all teams as per knowledge management protocols – including online and offline records.
  • Track and record the performance of all digital activities and campaigns against agreed metrics and targets and at agreed intervals (e.g. daily, weekly, monthly) using analytics tools, spreadsheets and reporting templates
  • With the support of all digital teams, develop digital dashboards and benchmarks for MSF (where possible shared dashboards) to track performance and trends and to help us link up our data (including social media, website and e-newsletter data)
  • Provide data for and assist coordinators with data analysis and reporting
  • Organize monthly data sharing sessions and generally assist with ensuring communication and sharing of digital data between teams, units and departments
  • Update online notice-boards as part of information sharing
  • Use data to try to find answers to specific queries from digital teams and Head of Comms

Other Responsibilities:

  • Maintain updated calendars of upcoming events, international days, deadlines, campaigns and digital activities
  • Assist with filing, follow-up on email, and basic office admin tasks related to activities of Comms digital teams
  • Schedule and organise internal and external meetings as required
  • Participate in brainstorming and planning for digital activities
  • Participate in the Knowledge Management Team activities (?)
  • In emergencies, be part of the digital emergency team and assist with all aspects of the digital emergency campaign under the supervision and guidance of Online Communication Manager

What are the requirements?

Education

  • Degree or diploma in communications, marketing or data sciences – must include some training on social media

Knowledge and skills

  • The ability to work across social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn
  • Ability to use a variety of computer programmes and platforms, such as MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, Google Analytics, Tweetdeck, Hootsuite, etc.

  • A desire to work collaboratively on projects and teach others what you know
  • Committed to helping others understand, use and share data
  • Interest in working closely with the rest of the Comms team to help develop and streamline MSF SA’s digital communications

MSF South Africa is looking for a Health Policy and Access Advocacy Intern with good planning and administrative skills, high flexibility and ability to work under pressure with competing priorities and deliver results.

With passion for humanitarian work, the intern will split their time between a) assisting the Regional HIV Advocacy Coordinator with regular administrative duties,updating  the regional HIV policy, guidelines and other strategic information for all the countries of support, assist with organising meetings, conferences and advocacy events and b) assisting the Access Campaign Advocacy Coordinator with administrative duties as well as research in the area of intellectual property and other access-related issues, collecting and compiling of strategic information and assisting with the organising of events, campaigns and advocacy-related work.

The intern will work part time for each of these positions, spending approximately 2.5 days per week working with the HIV Advocacy Coordinator and 2.5 days per week working with the Access Campaign Advocacy Coordinator.

This position will commence on the 1st of February 2017 or earlier if possible. This is an initial 6 month internship with the possibility of extension. All interns get paid an hourly stipend.

What are the requirements?

  • Minimum university graduate or post graduate student.
  • Preferably studying/studied Public Health, Development Studies, International Relations or Political Science, Law, or with demonstrable interest in working in the Health Policy Analysis and Advocacy field.
  • Knowledge of  regional health policy landscape, regional Health/HIV related organisations, donors and civil society organisations
  • Knowledge of local and regional treatment access barriers like IP, pricing, shortages, and other systemic issues
  • Interest in national and global health policy and organisations particularly related to HIV and/or Access to Treatment issues.
  • Knowledge of Word, Excel, Power Point essential
  • Professional telephone manner, tactful and excellent networking and negotiation skills.
  • Creative and highly flexible approach to work, and ability to work within a team, multi task and good stress management skills and ability to deal with high workload at specific times.
  • Creative social media skills

Doctors Without Borders (MSF), an international humanitarian medical aid organisation, created in 1971 as a response to an humanitarian crisis in Africa. The SA office, established in 2007, supports MSF programmes in the region and elsewhere by providing medical expertise, recruiting medical and other professionals. MSF in Johannesburg also speaks out about medical and humanitarian crises faced by vulnerable communities by sharing information with the South African public, the media, government agencies, and other non-governmental organizations.

Overview: The communications intern will support a research project which gathers and analyzes the experiences of MSF staff around the world. S/he will have the opportunity, through working in the office, to learn about MSF’s international programmes and provision of medical humanitarian aid worldwide. S/he will learn how an organization as MSF operates in complex and often dangerous contexts. This internship is ideal for anyone considering a career in humanitarian aid, communications, translation, journalism, research or advocacy.

Duties:
• Writing out interviews with MSF staff
• Assist in the translation of documents from French to English and vice-versa
• Additional duties can be added after discussion
