Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) is inviting applications from young South Africans looking to pursue their full-time studies in 2014 at any South African university. These bursaries are open to South African citizens who are currently in matric (Grade 12) [or those who have completed matric but are not currently studying] or in university but not beyond their second year of study. Applicants need to be 17 – 21 years old to be considered.

What are the requirements?

You must be studying or planning to study full-time towards any of the following qualifications at a South African university:

  • BA – Geography (majoring in GIS), or Demography or Population Studies
  • BSc – Computer Science or Mathematical Statistics
  • BCom – Economics, or Accounting or Statistics

Depending on your current educational level, you have to meet either of the following sets of minimum requirements to be considered:

Minimum requirements for school leavers (those in currently in Matric or those who have completed it):

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • Be between the ages of 17 and 21 years old
  • Have a university acceptance letter
  • Must have achievement Level 5 in Mathematics (NOT Maths Literacy)
  • Have an aggregate mark of 65% or more.

Minimum requirements for university students (those in currently in their 1st or 2nd year of study):

  • Be between the ages of 17 and 21 years old
  • You must be a South African citizen
  • Must be currently (in 2013) in your 1st or 2nd year of undergraduate studies
  • Have a minimum of 60% pass mark in all major courses.

The Department of Rural Development and Land Reform is currently offering  bursaries to qualifying applicants who are South African citizens and wish to  commence with tertiary studies during the 2014 academic year in one of the  following fields of study. Females and people with disabilities are encouraged to  apply.

Fields of study to be funded through this bursary and minimum requirements:

Fields of Study Minimum Requirements (National Senior Certificate)
Bsc in Land Surveying/Geomatics Mathematics and Physical Science
Bsc in Town and Regional Planning/Urban Design Mathematics, Geography and/or Physical Science
Bsc/BA in Geo-Informatics/ Geographic Information Science Mathematics and Physical Science
National Diploma in Surveying/ Cartography Mathematics and Physical Science
National Diploma in Town and Regional Planning Mathematics and/or Physical Science and Geography
Postgraduate studies (Honours/Masters in Geo-informatics / Geographic Information Science) It is a statutory requirement in terms of the PLATO Act (Act 40 of 1984) and the DPSA OSD that candidates must meet the requirements for registration with the Council for Professional and Technical Surveyors (PLATO) after completion of their studies. Consequently it is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that the programme offered by the university is accredited by PLATO.

 

It is the student’s responsibility to seek admission with tertiary institutions and  accommodation within University or University of Technology residence. Applicants  will be expected to enter into a contract with the Department.
The bursary is for a  full-time programme and will be renewed annually based on academic performance  or results.
The Bursary covers:  
  • Tuition.
  • Registration.
  • accommodation.
  • Meals.
  • Living. allowance.
  • Book fees

Are you a university student studying towards a degree in any of the science fields listed below? A matric/grade 12 learner planning on taking up any of the science studies listed below in 2014? Are you eager to have your studies in 2014 funded by one of the CSIR 2014 Bursaries? The CSIR is offering both post-graduate and undergraduate bursaries to deserving students/learners who are performing above average in their studies, you have to obtain an average of at least 65% in your studies. If your average is below 65%, you do not qualify.

What is covered in the CSIR 2014 Bursary?

The bursary is a comprehensive bursary which will pay for your registration fees, tuition fees, books, food, computer and other related expenses.

The bursary is offered only for the following programmes:

•  BSc – Computer Science
•  BCom – Economics, Accounting or Statistics
•  BA – Geography (majoring in GIS) or Demography

Eligibility

School leavers
•  Only SA citizens between the ages of 17–21.
•  Applicants should have a minimum symbol C in Mathematics.
•  University acceptance letter.
•  Applicants should have a minimum of 60% aggregate.

University students
•  Only SA citizens between the ages of 17–21, who are currently doing 1st and 2nd year undergraduate studies.
•  Applicants should have a minimum of 60% pass rate on all courses.

Requirements

Late, incomplete or unsigned application forms will not be accepted.
