CSIR Built Environment (BE) unit has a vacancy for an Intern in the Spatial Planning and Systems competence area. The incumbent will be expected to contribute to research work involving computerised models of growth in South African cities to support long-term infrastructure investment decisions. This is a contract position for one year and is based in Pretoria.

Key responsibilities:

  • Conduct literature searches.
  • Conduct desktop research.
  • Prepare and maintain GIS databases.
  • Undertake data analysis and GIS mapping.
  • Write basic reports.

Qualifications, skills and experience:

  • A Bachelor’s degree with specialisation in GIS and subjects related to geography, town and regional planning, information science or related fields.
  • Must be proficient in the use of GIS and databases.
  • No experiences required, but an interest in map-making and spatial analysis will be a recommendation.
  • Good interpersonal and team skills.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Problem-solving and solution-seeking orientation.
  • Good communication, presentation and writing skills.

CSIR Built Environment unit has a vacant position for an Internship: GIS Application in the Planning Support Systems competence area. The incumbent will be expected to contribute to research work in the fields of urban and regional planning and regional development with a specific focus on GIS-based spatial analysis and planning support.

This position is based in Stellenbosch.

Key responsibilities:

  • Undertake on the job GIS Accessibility training.
  • Maintain GIS databases.
  • Undertake GIS mapping.
  • Establish and update reference databases for projects outputs.
  • Produce tables and writing basic reports.
  • Conduct literature searches.
  • Conduct desktop research.

Qualifications, skills and experience:

  • A Bachelor’s degree with specialisation in GIS and subjects related to geography, town and regional planning, development planning or related fields.
  • Must be proficient in the use of GIS and database. Proficiency in ArcGIS will be advantageous.
  • Good interpersonal and team skills.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as in an interdisciplinary team.

The Municipal Demarcation Board Internship Programme is a twenty four (24) month programme where a trainee will be introduced to a broad spectrum of dynamics that facilitate significant learning experiences while developing generalist and specialist fields. In the twenty four (24) months you will be mentored by the Board’s senior staff and decision makers into building business acumen and creating a strategic context for your particular field and developing professional networks.

The Municipal Demarcation Board (the Board) is mandated to:

  • Determine municipal boundaries and to delimit wards.
  • Declare district management areas.
  • Assess the capacity of municipalities.

The Municipal Demarcation Board hereby invites applications for Internship opportunities that exist within the organisation.

Applications are invited from unemployed graduates residing across all Provinces so as to gain practical work experience in the following operations at the Municipal Demarcation Board.

Internships will be offered in the following work areas Areas of Qualifications
Municipal boundaries Determinations/re-determination

Ward Boundaries delimitation

Social or economic geography; Land survey, cartography; Statistics; Integrated Development Planning;

Town and Regional planning;

 

GIS & Database Management Research GIS and Information Technology;

Requirements:

● An appropriate tertiary qualification Degree/National Diploma relevant to the above-mentioned fields.

● Unemployed graduates who have never participated in an internship programme.

● Applicants should be between 18 to 35 years of age and South African citizens.

● Driver’s licence.

 

Notes and Instruction to Applicants, please read carefully:

1. The programme will run for a period of two (2) years.

2. Successful applicant/s will be required to enter into an Internship contract with the Municipal Demarcation Board.

3. The Municipal Demarcation Board is under no obligation to employ the Intern on completion of the programmes.

4. Interns will be paid a monthly stipend.

5. Separate application must be provided for each position applied for.

6. NB: If you have participated in an internship programme before please do not apply or you will be disqualified. People with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
