Do you want to join a global giant in the mining sector? Are you currently studying or planning to study towards a career relevant to mining? Hernic Ferrochrome in Brits, North West is currently accepting applications into it’s 2014 engineering bursary programme. The bursary programme will find students and prospective students in Electrical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering and Mining Engineering.

What are the requirements?

You have to meet the following requirements in order to apply for this bursary:

  • If you are currently in Grade 12/Matric or have completed matric: You must have pure Mathematics and Physical Science passed with a minimum symbol of C (i.e. you must have obtained 60% and above)
  • If you are already at university in your 1st or 2nd year: You must have passed all your subjects so far.

If I am successful what will the Hernic Ferrochrome bursary pay for:

It will pay your school fees, accommodation and food, including registration fees. It will also buy prescribed books for you.

You will also get a laptop allowance; and during vacations you will work for Hernic Ferrochrome and you will be paid for it.

One of South Africa’s mining giants, Gold Fields, is inviting South African students and prospective students to apply for funding by its bursary scheme.

A limited number of bursaries are awarded each year to selected candidates to study for a bachelor’s degree at a South African university OR a national diploma at a South African Technikon (University of Technology). The intention of the scheme is to provide the Gold Fields Limited Group with high-calibre graduates who wish to make their career in one of its companies.

Bursary requirements:

University

University of Technology/ Technikon

Candidates must be:

·         South African citizens and under or turning the age of 21 during their first year of study (applicants for first year of undergraduate study) and under or turning (or have been under the age of, or turned) the age of 23 during their second year of study (applicants for second and subsequent years of undergraduate study)

·         studying or intending to study full-time towards a degree at a recognised South African university that is acceptable to GFL

·         able to provide proof of their academic results for grade 11 and progress in grade 12 or alternatively be in possession of a grade 12 exemption certificate with acceptable symbols or tertiary results

·         intending to study for a bachelor’s degree full-time commencing in the year after the application is made

·         accepted by the university for the degree course as recorded on the bursary application form

 

Candidates must:

·beSouth African citizens and under or turning the age of 21 during their first year of study (applicants for first year of underdiplomate study) and under or turning (or have been under the age of, or turned) the age of 23 during their second year of study (applicants for second and subsequent years of underdiplomate study)

· be studying or intending to study full-time towards a national qualification at a recognised South African institute of technology that is acceptable to GFL

· be able to provide proof of their academic results for grade 11 and progress in grade 12(National Senior Certificate) or alternatively be in possession of a grade 12 (National Senior Certificate) exemption certificate with Mathematics and Physical Science with an achievement level of 6 or, under the old Matriculation System, with Mathematics and Physical Science HG D or SG C symbols or tertiary results

· be in possession of a Medical Certificate of Fitness or be fit enough to obtain one

· be accepted by the institute of technology for the diploma course as recorded on the bursary application form

 

Study fields

A number of study fields relevant Gold Fields’ operational areas will be considered for the bursary. All fields listed below will be considered for undergraduate and underdiplomate qualifications only; except for the Geology field which will be considered ONLY for Honours degree studies.

*  In the geology discipline, bursaries are not considered for undergraduate studies only.

bursaries will only currently be considered for the following diplomas:

  • Mining Engineering
  • Extraction Metallurgy
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Finance
  •  Environmental Management
  • Mine Survey
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current and Light Current)

 

The scheme is only offered for a National Diploma or National Technical Diploma qualification (where applicable).

 

SELECTION PROCEDURE

(1)   Application forms are sent out between February and May of each year.  Forms will be sent to those applicants intending to study or already studying in a field related to the Group’s projected manpower requirements (see above). 

             The closing date for applications is 30 June. Late applications will not be considered.

(2)   Shortlisted candidates will be contacted in June and will be required to undergo psychometric testing as well as a panel interview.  In addition, all candidates are required to undergo a medical examination, and be in possession of a valid Medical Certificate of Fitness for the appropriate category of work for the duration of their bursary and subsequent employment with GFL or its nominee. 

(3)   After completion of the selection process, bursary awards are determined at the discretion of GFL Mining Services Limited. All awards are subject to the applicant gaining acceptance, or gaining promotion to the year of study applied for, for the course at the university and for the commencement year stipulated in their bursary agreement.  Selected candidates will be notified in writing.

      (5) Selected candidates will be required to sign a bursary agreement in acceptance of the award.

      (6) The Bursar will be required to provide surety for the agreement.

BURSARY OBLIGATIONS

The Bursar undertakes to work for GFL or its nominee for a year for each year (or part thereof) of studies

for which GFL has made bursary payments, e.g. a 3-year bursary gives rise a 3-year obligation to serve

GFL or its nominee.

BURSARS MAY NOT ACCEPT OTHER BURSARIES

Bursars receiving financial study assistance from another source must disclose this fact immediately on applying for a GFL bursary.  The company’s approval of such assistance is required prior to the award of a bursary (and approval is entirely at the company’s discretion).  This condition does not prevent a Bursar from receiving assistance from parents or relatives out of purely private means.

To apply you need to download the relevant application form, fill it in and return it together with the required documents to Gold Fields on or before the closing date (see below).

The MQA bursary scheme was established to increase the number of learners taking careers in the mining and minerals sector. Today the bursary scheme continues to assist learners by offering them the opportunity to study these careers at Higher Education and Training (HET).

The MQA bursary covers full tuition, accommodation, meals and book allowances. The bursary will be awarded to students enrolled in careers identified in the scarce and critical skills list, particularly in core mining related disciplines.

Minimum criteria
The minimum criteria required include a strong academic record accompanied by a need for financial assistance. Applicants must also have genuine interest in and knowledge of the mining and minerals sector.

The MQA bursary supports the following core mining disciplines:

  • Mining Engineering
  • Mine Survey
  • Metallurgical Engineering (Extractive only)
  • Geology
  • Environmental Health and Management

Students studying the following disciplines will also be considered, although there are limited bursaries available:

  • Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current only)
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering( Mineral Processing)
  • Electro-Mechanical Engineering
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Jewellery Design and Manufacturing

Special consideration will be given to female applicants as well as applicants living with disabilities.

The MQA carries a service obligation and successful applicants will be obligated to secure employment within the South African mining and minerals sector for the same amount of years as the sponsored bursary.
