The Mail & Guardian is pleased to invite young graduates to apply for one of four paid editorial internships in its Johannesburg newsroom, running from July 2017 to June 2018. While each successful candidate will receive a general grounding in newsroom processes and editorial production skills, interns will be assigned to one of the following areas: Copyediting, layout and design, online, multimedia and social media, Arts writing, illustration, graphic design and media production.
While there will be opportunities to report and write, the focus of the internship programme will be the editorial processes involved in the production and presentation of stories and articles both online and in print, as well as in multimedia and on social media.

This programme will therefore not be limited to journalism graduates. Other appropriate fields of study may include but are not limited to languages and the liberal arts, graphic design, sound and video production, and website development.
It is in the M&G’s interest to seek out and nurture passion and potential, and to give those who hope to pursue a career in journalism a solid foundation in the fundamentals of the craft. In so doing we hope to ensure the continuation of quality journalism within the M&G and the wider industry.

Remuneration: R10 000 monthly allowance.
Required skills and experience: No experience necessary.
The internships will be based in Rosebank, Johannesburg.

Founded in 1985 by a group of journalists from then recently closed Rand Daily Mail and Sunday Express newspapers, the Mail & Guardian (M&G) has grown to be one of South Africa’s authorities on investigative reporting and political news. The M&G is inviting applications from unemployed graduates for its 2016 editorial / newsroom internships which will be based within their Rosebank, Johannesburg offices. This internships are open to graduates in fields such as journalism, languages, media studies, and liberal arts, graphic design, sound and video production, website development or other related fields.  Interns will be paid a monthly stipend of R10,000.

You will be given training and afforded an opportunity to gain experience in all facets of “editorial production, from copyediting, proofreading, page layout and design to site uploading and management, SEO headline writing and basic HTML, and picture, video and audio editing,” according to the M&G Online.

What are the requirements?

To be considered for this opportunity, you have to meet the following requirements:

  • Have a tertiary qualification in: journalism, languages, media studies, and liberal arts, graphic design, sound and video production, website development or other related fields.

Are you a talented, confident young graduate with a penchant for storytelling and a passion for the pursuit of truth? Do you have an excellent general knowledge and grasp of the English language? Do you want to shape public discussion through the stories you tell? Are you a hard worker who pays attention to detail and who seeks a long-term career in journalism?

If you’ve answered yes to all the above, the Mail & Guardian, which prides itself on impactful journalism, excellence and innovation, would like to meet you. Applications are open for our six-month journalism internship programme for 2014.

If you are successful you will work with and learn from the M&G’s team of award-winning journalists and editors from July 2014 to December 2014, be based in Johannesburg and receive a modest monthly stipend during the internship.
