Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is inviting applications for its 2021 Philanthropy Research Intern position from unemployed graduates with qualifications in Business Administration, Marketing or Data Sciences. Reporting to the Head of Philanthropy & Partnerships, the Philanthropy Research Intern supports the growth and retention of MSF SA’s Major donor, corporate, trust and foundation revenue program mainly:

  • By participating in the identification of individual and organisational donors who will have the propensity and capacity to give to MSF SA, with a focus on their reporting requirements
  • By researching and providing updated project, grant and other relevant information on the current portfolio (of major donors, trusts & foundations and corporate donors)
  • By collecting necessary data internally within MSF and preparing requisite internal philanthropy team and external donor reports
  • By maintaining updated planning to deliver grant proposals and reports in due time

We are looking for a proactive and analytical individual with a commitment to confidentiality and high ethical standards. The Philanthropy Research Intern will have the ability to synthesize and translate his/her research into practical suggestions/actions to the Philanthropy team fundraising goals.

The Philanthropy Research Intern will have to be an individual with an interest in data gathering and research. He or she should be highly computer literate with high-level oral, written communication and data presentation skills.

KEY TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Prospect Research and management
  • Identify and qualify new prospects by researching and analysing individuals, foundations, and corporations for their potential interest in MSF.
  • Research and write due diligence reports on new prospects to ensure that new donations are in line with MSF SA’s gift acceptance policy.
  • Conduct prospective donor research, including identifying active mid-level donors for potential upgrades through active data mining and ranking.
  • Rate donors (lapsed or mid-level) and prospects in terms of inclination and capacity to give.
  • Participate in team meetings on prospect review, cultivation and solicitation strategies.
  • Contribute to and maintain the report tracking system for major donors and prospects including the recording of meetings, outcomes, next steps and follow up strategy.
  • Write confidential research profiles on individual, corporate and foundation donors/prospects for meetings and strategic planning,
  • Assist with preparation of background briefing notes for staff in preparation for donor/prospect meetings.
  1. Administrative support to the Philanthropy unit
  • Participate and take minutes in donor meeting debriefings with the Philanthropy team and other staff/volunteers as needed/requested.  
  • Provide administrative support to the Philanthropy team in recording donor/prospect contacts and moves as requested.
  • Collect data to fulfil the reporting needs
  • Update the tracking system for trusts & foundations/corporate donors and prospects, based on research into grant eligibility criteria and application guidelines.
  • Keep current of all recent trends in the Southern Africa NGO sector, the culture of philanthropy (especially in Africa), prospect research and incorporate any relevant information into briefing materials and regularly report on opportunities to appropriate staff.
  • Other duties as required to ensure the continued success in MSF SA’s Fundraising activities.

ROTATIONAL PROGRAM

This Internship position allows for rotation between the Philanthropy Research Intern and the Philanthropy Reporting Intern. Rotations will be determined through team needs, candidate interests and mentor guidance. The reason for the rotational internship is to encourage development by allowing for a more holistic view of the different aspects of philanthropy over the 12-month period. The benefits of a rotation system are:

  • Successful candidates get a full view of how the philanthropy unit operates over the 12-month internship.
  • The interns support and empower each other, while receiving learning support from team members within Philanthropy and Fundraising unit as a whole.
  • Constant and clear pathway for the transfer of information and skills thus encouraging accelerated development.

THE PHILANTHROPY REPORTING INTERN ROTATION OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Strategic Partnerships & Philanthropy Officer, the Philanthropy Report Intern supports the retention of MSF SA’s Corporate, Trust and Foundation revenue program and the relationship management activities of front line fundraisers:

  • By maintaining an updated planning to deliver grant proposals and reports in due time
  • By assisting with data collection from MSF SA Communication department, OCB Funding Unit, Operations, Medical and other relevant teams for the purposes of compiling reports as required
  • By preparing written grant proposals, reports and presentations

REQUIREMENTS

Education

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Marketing, Business Administration, Data Sciences

As a Digital Data Intern, you will be working together with digital teams in managing data records in line with performance monitoring of digital activities against set objectives and targets. The Digital Data Intern’s main duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Create and maintain an approved glossary of digital terminologies, indicators and KPIs for every digital platform to ensure consistency
  • Document and manage online and offline records of digital accounts, activities, platforms and campaigns which all must be accessible to all teams
  •  Monitor and document the performance of every digital activity and campaign against approved metrics and targets at specific intervals
  • Work with all digital teams in developing digital dashboards as well as benchmarks for the organization
  • Provide essential data that will assist coordinators during data analysis and reporting
  • Organize data sharing activities as well as providing assistance to ensure consistent communication across the organization

What are the requirements?

Candidates will need to satisfy the minimum eligibility requirements to get considered for the position:

  • Must possess a diploma or degree in Communications, Data Science or Marketing
  • Familiar with the use of various social media platforms
  • Some background or training on the use of analytics platforms
  • Has done at least basic data reporting and analytics, an advantage
  • Actual working experience in the effective management of short and long-term responsibilities as well as working with a high sense of urgency in a high-pressure office environment
  • Knows how to use basic computer applications (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and platforms (Hootsuite, Tweetdeck, Google Analytics, etc.)

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) South Africa is looking for a Prospect Research Intern. The Prospect Research Intern at MSF Southern Africa as part of the High Value Team and will be instrumental in helping the team identify and build a portfolio of specific individuals, trusts and foundations by providing key information on current and potential new supporters. Additionally, the intern will help produce research briefs for the High Value Team. In turn the prospect research intern will have an opportunity to learn first-hand the Principles of Fundraising from a highly innovative and experienced team.

Reporting to the Donor Development Coordinator the prospect research intern supports the growth and retention of MSF’s South Africa’s mid-level and major donor revenue programme. In addition to assuming responsibility for meeting the prospect identification and research needs of the fundraising department the Prospect Research intern proactively reviews the mid-level and major gifts pipeline and actively researches new prospects.

The Prospect Research Intern will ideally be an individual with an interest in prospect identification, research and strategy formulation. He or she should be highly computer literate with high level oral, written communication and statistical presentation skills.

This is an initial 6 month internship with the possibility of extension. All interns get paid an hourly stipend.

What are the requirements?

Education

  • Relevant tertiary qualification / studying towards a qualification in marketing, advertising; or 1-2 years’ experience in a marketing environment.
  • No prior knowledge (e.g. of prospect research or trusts and foundations) is necessary
  • A natural curiosity about people is key, as in an interest in research

Knowledge and skills

  • Proficiency in Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the methods of information acquisition, including use of online sources, and print directories/media. Show initiative in identifying new sources of information, as they become necessary and/or available.
  •  Ability to organise and manage a diverse range of assignments and projects with high efficiency, yet thorough attention to detail and follow through.
  •  Demonstrate strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to adjust to changing priorities and meet deadlines.
  •  Demonstrate competence in a variety of computer applications, including database, spreadsheet and word processing programs.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately and with discretion.
  •   Resourceful and independent, but comfortable working within the framework of an integrated fundraising program and team-oriented environment.
  •  Excellent analytical skills and ability to locate and interpret financial and biographical information from a variety of sources.
