The CSIR R & D Office seeks to enhance its capacity by appointing an intern.  The purpose of this appointment will mainly be to provide technical, analytical and administrative support to the R&D strategy function. This appointment is for the duration of one year and it is based in Pretoria.

Key responsibilities:

  • Undertake research for strategic initiatives.
  • Brainstorm ideas; gather requirements and data; perform qualitative and quantitative analysis.
  • Provide administrative support to strategic programmes.
  • Assist with knowledge management initiatives within the portfolio.
  • Work independently, but under supervision of senior management within the group.

Qualifications and skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Engineering or Technology (SET). However, an Honours will be added advantage.
  • Analytical, problem-solving, and qualitative skills
  • Good communication and presentation skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and open source software
  • Planning and organizing skills
  • Proactive

  • Ability to work under pressure

The Applied Centre for Climate and Earth Systems Science (ACCESS) is a Department of Science & Technology (DST)/National Research Foundation (NRF) Centre of Excellence (CoE) which is an instrument of the DST’s Global Change Grand Challenge (GCGC). ACCESS comprises a consortium of universities, research agencies, science councils and research programmes, which is implementing the GCGC Science Plan and the Human Capital Development plan (with an emphasis on the Earth Systems Science aspects) through a series of activities and Sub-programmes.

The goal of ACCESS’ education portfolio is to build and prepare a pool of talented young scientists, in the field of Earth Systems Science (ESS) such as, biology, geology, meteorology, oceanography, etc.

ACCESS is seeking a passionate and driven, full-time Intern to assist us in the implementation of our education portfolio activities. The role will involve helping to support and develop various ACCESS education initiatives in the field of ESS. These include outreach programmes at schools, the undergraduate sub-programme (Habitable Planet Workshop), and our postgraduate workshops.

These positions are based in Cape Town (Rosebank).

Key responsibilities:

The successful candidate will report to the ACCESS Education Manager and will be expected to support ACCESS training events through:

  • Assisting with creative input and planning for ACCESS events and activities.
  • Working with relevant staff to assist with administration, planning and logistics.
  • Making a creative input in developing content for courses and training.
  • Delivering of teaching /training at events (as appropriate).
  • Participating in ACCESS Management meetings and perform related functions.
  • Assisting with reporting and accounting systems for the ACCESS Education and Training Programme, in cooperation with the ACCESS management team.

Qualifications, skills and experience:

  • This position would suit a recent graduate who has an interest in developing a career in science communication or education/science management.
  • The minimum qualification for this post is an Honours degree. A Master’s degree in a related field of study (science or science education) will be an advantage.
  • The ideal candidate should have excellent oral/written communication and/or teaching skills and be able to engage students effectively at a range of levels (from high school to postgraduate).

The internship is will be renewable depending on funding availability, performance and the availability of a position within the ACCESS programme.

The CSIR’s Strategic Alliance and Communication portfolio has a vacancy for an Internship. The incumbent will be responsible for support to CSIR: Strategic Partnerships to effectively develop collaborative programmes with partners and to monitor and report ongoing research activities.

Key responsibilities:

  • Source data and compile information for the preparation of research collaboration reports.
  • Prepare for meetings with the key stakeholders to scope areas of collaboration.
