The CSIR/Department of Science and Technology National Centre for Nano-structured Materials is a platform for the implementation of the South African National Nanotechnology Strategy. It undertakes innovative research on nano-structured materials and has an extensive research network with other local and international research organisations. It has a strong focus on human capital development; makes a significant contribution to the creation and dissemination of new scientific knowledge; and collaborates closely with industry to help ensure successful outcomes and impact of the group’s research and development (R&D) activities. This position is based in Pretoria.
Key responsibilities:
- Assist researchers who develop nano-composites and investigate the processing conditions of PP, PE and PVC, to form polymer nano-composites with improved properties.
- Upscale such processes to small-scale production capacities on the twin screw extruder available at the centre.
- Assist with compounding, injection moulding, film blowing, mechanical testing and data collection.
Qualifications, skills and experience:
- A national diploma or BTech in polymer science and/or polymer processing.
- Communicationand presentation skills.
- Problem-solving, solution-seeking orientation.
- A goal-oriented approach.
- Ability to work independently as well as in teams.
- Computer literacy.
The following skills and experience will be considered as desirable:
- Knowledge of polymer processing.
- Compounding experience using nano-additives.
- Understanding of polymer applications and needs.
- Safety experience.
